Pirates wheelchair rugby club
Are you up for a challenge? Fancy a nail-biting, seat-gripping, full contact wheelchair sport? Great social opportunities and supportive environment where you can increase your fitness and have fun.
Its open to men and women currently we are unable to run an under-18/junior setup but this may change in the future. If you have upper and lower limb impairment and a keen interest in competitive sport then maybe its about time you gave Wheelchair Rugby a go. We at the South Wales Pirates would love to see you at our club training sessions.
There are opportunities to play at every level, whether as an elite international athlete or purely for leisure. We offer a number of training sessions in the week where you can come and have a go. We have spare wheelchairs so that you can try out the game with the help of our experienced coaches and staff. There are also loads of opportunities to play your part on the sidelines whether as an official, coach or in an administration role.
Wheelchair Rugby is a no holds barred contact sport full of speed, physical agility and skill.
The game is played indoors on a basketball court measuring 28m by 15m with boundary lines, a centre line, centre circle, and two key areas. 2 cones at either end of the court mark out a key area and goal line. A goal is scored when a player carries the ball across the goal line. Games are played over 4 x 8 minute quarters and managed by 2 referees and 4 table officials.
In Wheelchair Rugby everybody has a vital role to play on the court. This is ensured using a classification system based on muscle function and strength. Classes range from 0.5 to 3.5, and a team of four players must total 8 points or less during play.
So, if you think you would like to get involved and have a look at how the sport is played, come along to one of our training sessions.
